Lenda Murray likes the current state of women's bodybuilding

There are a few people in bodybuilding whose names are synonymous with royalty in a way. Schwarzenegger, Haney and Coleman may be a few names that come to mind. Another such name is Murray, as in Lenda Murray. Lots of fans and people still associate her with women's bodybuilding, and for good reason. She is still involved in the sport as a promoter and commentator on shows such as: Femme Flex Friday.

Lenda Murray joined Isabelle Turell on the Fit Rockstar show and discussed the difficulty of competing at the highest level.

"I really think it's an inside job. I think we all approach it differently," Murray said. "It's a different aspect than most extreme athletes, whether track and field or whatever, and you get to that level. For us, our extreme is on the body. So people can see it."

Murray understood that even though the name on the marquee was “bodybuilding,” it was about much more than physical preparation and competition. There was a mental component, especially as the competition approached, and she found it was not an easy process, to say the least.

“When you get to the final stages, which is when the mind and you allow your body to go where it needs to go for you to win, I think that was a challenge for me.”

In mid-2010, bodybuilding wasn't as prominent because it was banned from the Olympics. Entered then new Olympia owner Jake Wood, and Ms. Olympia returned. Murray felt that Ms. Olympia's presence was important and that this title is a big part of how successful the entire women's side of the sport is.

“Bodybuilding, we are the beginning and we laid the foundation for you,” Murray proudly told Turell. When she sees a champion like Andrea Shaw standing at the top of the division, she is happy to know that the sport itself is running the way it is.

“I feel like we’re definitely back on track,” she explained. "Because of women's bodybuilding, the sport is really thriving in all other disciplines. So they've benefited greatly."
