Jada Beverly and Stephanie Flesher discuss their competitive evolution
The IFBB Pro League consists of six women's divisions - Bodybuilding, Physique, Fitness, Figure, Bikini and Wellness. This is because leadership wanted athletes to have multiple options should their physiques evolve and change over time. For example, a competitor that started in Figure can grow and are more suitable for women's bodybuilding.
Two athletes who fit this criteria, Jada Beverly and Stephanie Flesher, were recent guests at Femme Flex Friday and they talked about the changes that led them to compete in multiple divisions throughout their careers. Beverly has been competing for ten years, going back to her days as a a real newbie in 2012. It would be a few years before she had to make the switch, but she remembered the moment like it was yesterday. She made her selection at the 2018 Arnold Amateur after placing sixth.
“That was the turning point for me,” Beverly said. "In 2018, I made the decision to move up to Women's Physique. I then competed in my first Women's Physique show at Mike Francois in Ohio and won."
Beverly would turn pro in the 2019 NPC USA competition and then move back up to women's bodybuilding in 2021. As for Flesher, she also started out in Figure before moving to Women’s Physique. She shared that it was Lenda Murray who made her switch divisions after a seventh-place finish at the 2021 Omaha Pro.
“You told me if I had done women’s bodybuilding, I would have won the show,” she told Murray and co-host Whitney Jones. “You called me The Bomb dot Com and I played that video like 20 times in the next two weeks.”
Murray's assessment was correct as she went to Chicago later that year and finished third in her now current division. She has already placed second in two competitions in 2022, cementing this idea even more.
