Take stock of your company’s experiences and learn from them

Before you prepare to make any changes to your business, it is always a good idea to evaluate everything your business has experienced throughout the year and take stock of where your business currently stands. This process is also beneficial for identifying lessons the year has left you and using them to create a more effective strategy moving forward.

Take a moment to think about the following:

How External Changes Affected Your Business Which programs and services generated the most revenue and what made them successful? Which programs and services generated the least revenue and why didn't they work? Feedback from your customers The biggest challenges to running your business What experiences brought you the most personal and professional satisfaction Whether your time management strategies were effective Whether youExperienced burnoutand why If software memberships were well used Whether your employees and external contracts met your requirements

Based on these considerations, plan the future of your company by leveraging the company's strengths and strengthening the company's weaknesses.

As you plan the future of your business, don't forget to ask yourself what your personal goals are and how achieving those goals will impact your business.

Legal preparation of your company for the new year

As busy coaches, it's easy to get caught up in the daily schedule of programming and one-on-one coaching and not spend time on the administrative aspects of your business.

Take a moment to self-examine the various aspects of your business and determine how you can best prepare for business growth.

Work within the scope of your practice

As your business grows, so does the control of your business activities. Whether you offer services as a personal trainer, nutritionist, health and wellness coach, or another specialty, make sure you do not offer programs or services that are outside your scope of practice.

If you are unsure about what you can or cannot legally do with your certification, we recommend reading these articles and guides:

Register your company

Is your company registered? Or do you offer your services as a self-employed person?

If you haven't done this, you can register your business in your state. Most health and wellness coaching companies register as a limited liability company (LLC). Registering your LLC is a relatively quick and inexpensive process (between $30 and $200 depending on the state) and can help reduce your taxes. You can apply for an LLC yourself or contact a legal service for assistance.

File your annual reports

Companies must keep their annual reporting up to date. If you own an LLC, you will likely need to file your annual or semi-annual reports with your state Secretary of State. Annual reports let shareholders know how the business is doing financially and what the plans are for your company in the future. If you don't have time to prepare the annual report, you may want to outsource the reporting.

What happens if you don't file your annual report? Your state may revoke your LLC status or you may have to pay fees.

Make sure your taxes are up to date

Depending on how you do business, you will have different tax requirements. For example, if you work as a freelancer, you should file quarterly taxes. If you are doing business as an LLC, you must file either a partnership or a corporation.

If you are unsure of the best way to file your taxes or do not have the time to file your company's taxes, consider using a filing service or hiring a tax professional to ensure your taxes are paid.

Have the correct contracts and forms

While a contract is not mandatory for some health and wellness professionals, it can help secure payment and establish responsibilities. One of the key elements when working with new customers is contract drafting. The contract should contain the following:

Service Details Billing and Payment Policies Termination of Contract Cancellation Policy Appointment Scheduling

Remember that contracts that are intended to be legally binding should be drafted by a lawyer.

Other forms you may want to have include liability waivers and medical history forms.

Preparing programming for the new year

In order for your business to continue to grow, it must continually innovate to meet changing customer needs and respond to trendsin your niche.

No matter how great your current programs are, it's always worth spending time looking at them critically to see how they can improve.

Here are some suggestions for how you can start innovating your programming:

Review current guidelines and research: Are your programs responsive to these guidelines or are they outdated? Determine whether your programs address the future needs of current clients: For many health and wellness coaches, their clients are hoping for a change, be it emotional, behavioral or physical. Does your current programs have the opportunity to grow with your customers or will they "graduate out" of your services? Consider expanding your team: Do you need additional professionals to meet your customers' needs? Perhaps hiring professionals from different fields will help you diversify your services.
Evaluate the benefits of parcel services:Package services and programs can help you make better use of your time and your current customers than hourly services. Take Your Online Services: If you haven't already, online services will allow you to significantly expand your reach and couldIncrease your income. Consider integrating apps and software into your services: Apps not only help you diversify your services, but they can also make your life easier! If you're not sure how to innovate your programming, you may need to take a moment to redefine your niche and do market research.
