Weight Loss Programs: Which Weight Loss Program Will Really Work?
Weight loss programs often have big demands. Understanding the “science” behind weight loss will keep you focused on the achievable ones.
The key is to try not to simply accept or reject the “claim,” but to see what kind of program is more scientifically sound – and therefore able to live up to its claim. To understand weight gain and weight loss, we must understand that the body actually has a three-sided energy equation...
... there is ENERGY INPUT (what we eat), ENERGY OUTPUT (what we use for activities) and ENERGY STORED (fat layer in the body is solidified stored energy).
The first mistake most people make is only considering energy input and output in their theories about weight loss programs. So they simply try to either eat less or exercise more to control their weight. While it is very important to shed some light on the third side of this energy equation – and that is “stored energy”!
What happens in the body of someone who is fat, overweight and not fit? Too much input for the wrong reasons, too little output due to a less active lifestyle, and therefore too much storage space (i.e. excessive fat gain).
Now let's look at an important scientific factor that is not visible in this equation, but affects all weight loss programs most drastically... the psychology of the mind!
A great many people believe that the mind causes the body to crave food and hate exercise! But the mind does not directly influence the input and output of energy... it is very important to understand this.
The mind actually influences the third point – the “storage problems” of energy. A mind that subliminally perceives the external environment in which we live as difficult, hostile, threatening, etc. sends signals to the body that fat reserves need to be strengthened in case of sudden or future crisis needs. And an obedient body responds!
It automatically adjusts its behavior - by creating a desire for energy input and a disgust for energy input. This is why our behavior seems involuntary and out of control. And that's why our weight loss programs seem unsustainable.
Just listen to this logic and your doubts about how to lose weight quickly will disappear… the right weight loss programs help the mind send the right signals to the body! That's the secret.
This is why diets and pills don't work...they can't change the mind's view of life. But exercise is one thing that can really change our mind's threat perception and transform it into an attitude of assertiveness.
How? When we set a physically challenging goal, when we do what it takes day after day, and despite all odds, we strengthen in our minds our ability to conquer the environment. A strong dose of action taken as a daily challenge has a mentally strengthening quality, more than just a body strengthening quality!
Even among the exercises to be taken up, it is best to choose one that is itself non-threatening and natural - because if the mind sees the exercise itself as too strenuous or threatening, the purpose will be defeated. That's why the world of long-term fitness is so full of people who have chosen walking - the ultimate natural and non-threatening exercise of all weight loss programs.
