Well, the truth is, at least according to most commentators on the topic, that other than exercise, neither of the other two main weight loss options have the promise of weight loss on their own. Although there have been cases of people trying to lose weight through the use of diet alone or through the use of one or another supplement alone, the weight loss thus achieved is usually very short-lived. so that one ends up regaining the weight they had lost and perhaps more if one stops using the said diet or supplement. Ideally, you should train both in the gym and outside the gym (at home), so that in addition to the focused exercises you do in the gym, you also have a more active lifestyle outside of the gym (walking to work instead of driving). If possible, take the stairs rather than the elevators on tall buildings and so on.
It's worth noting, of course, that while we're not going to use "diet" as a weight loss aid here, overindulging in the wrong types of foods would be self-sabotage in every way; so you still have to make sure they eat sensibly all the time, even if they don't have a formal diet.
