How tea can help you lose weight

Green tea can help reduce body fat by 1.6 percent, according to a recent National Library of Medicine report published by the National Institutes of Health. It is important to note that the study was conducted on men with an average age of 21 years and that they were required to cycle regularly throughout the duration of the study.

But the real question is, how does tea help you lose weight?

We keep hearing about tea as a good drink for those who want to lose those extra pounds, but what is the science behind this claim?

Experts say greens in particular contain catechins – a type of antioxidant that has fat-burning properties. A 2009 study states that green tea catechins and the caffeine contained in the drink help regulate body weight.

In this particular study, it was reiterated that these two components work synergistically. But what about the decaffeinated green tea study mentioned above?

The evidence for green tea and its fat burning effects is mixed and often one would read a number of scientific claims that speak against each other or at least have different or conflicting details.

According to an article published by Penn State in April 2014, green tea and exercise help with weight loss and the combination also benefits a person's overall health.

High-fat diet, decaffeinated green tea and exercise

A study from the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences found that mice that ate a high-fat diet but also received decaffeinated tea extract experienced weight loss and overall health improvements.

During the 16-week study, the mice also exercised regularly. The reduction in body mass was 27.1 percent, with a large reduction in abdominal fat of 36.6 percent.

In terms of other health benefits, the study shows a decrease in insulin resistance in the mice - a significant benefit for people with diabetes. Previous studies on green tea show that a compound found in this type of tea may also destroy cancer cells.

That compound, scientists say, is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, also known as EGCG.

Human trials of green tea showed an average weight loss of 1.31 kilograms, according to Penn State - giving weight watchers a good reason to drink tea regularly.

If you remember the study conducted on 14 men using decaffeinated green tea, the results of the Penn State study show that the absence of caffeine enhances the effects of regular exercise.

This has been confirmed by food scientist Joshua Lambert, which leads us to conclude that decaffeinated tea is good for people who exercise regularly.

Other types of tea and weight loss

Tea and its effects on reducing body mass have been studied at a number of universities around the world. But what about other types of tea? Is it possible that there are other teas that you can drink to lose weight?

A variety of oolong tea called Wuyi is said to be a good supplement for weight loss, but experts say science does not support this claim.

Pu-erh, a type of black tea, is said to prevent weight gain based on an animal study. It also reduces LDL cholesterol according to the same study.

However, Tufts University scientist Diane L. McKay says it's important to regularly include healthy drinks in your diet to reap health benefits.
