A lesson on the components of health-related fitness
The components of health-related fitness are explained
If you want to keep your body in shape and gain a better understanding of physical health and wellness, you should be aware of five different components of health-related fitness. We provide an overview of these along with a brief definition and then highlight some actions you can take to improve in each of these different areas.
Reading health and fitness information articles is an important ingredient for a productive, healthy and healthy lifestyle. So let's take a closer look at each of these components individually.
They are:
Muscle strength
Muscular endurance
flexibility
Cardiovascular efficiency
Body composition
Muscle strength
Muscle strength is pretty much what it sounds like. It is the amount of force a muscle can produce. This is simply the amount of resistance your muscles can overcome, and it is usually measured by the maximum amount of weight you can physically move, push, pull, or lift. The size of a muscle is typically in direct proportion to its strength, meaning the larger the muscle, the stronger it is. Muscle strength is best improved through strength training.
Muscular endurance
Muscular endurance is the ability of your muscles to produce the required force over a sustained period of time. With good endurance, your body can perform repetitive movements without fatigue. Muscular endurance is best increased through cardio training, exercises such as running, swimming or cycling. You can build specific muscular endurance by increasing the time a muscle spends contracting against resistance. To gain endurance for a specific movement, you essentially want to repeat that desired movement over and over again.
flexibility
This allows you to move body parts through a specific range of motion. It is the ability to fully utilize joints, or the ability of a joint to move through its possible range of motion. Flexibility is one of the most important, yet most overlooked components of health-related fitness. Performing stretching exercises improves a person's flexibility and prevents injuries and pain.
Cardiovascular efficiency
This is the body's ability to undergo intense physical activity for a long period of time. A weak cardiovascular system prevents your heart and lungs from supplying enough oxygen and energy to your muscles, which means you get tired more quickly. This can be improved with cardio-specific training or with exercises such as walking, running, swimming, or other exercises that increase your heart rate.
Body composition
Body composition is the final component to health-related fitness. This is the amount of fat cells compared to lean cells in the body. This can be measured using a number of devices, each with advantages and disadvantages. However, some of the most popular are a skinfold caliper, bioelectrical impedance analysis, or hydrostatic weighing. It is generally reported as body fat percentage. Body composition is improved by improving your diet as well as exercising frequently.
In summary, it is important to have good health and fitness information to achieve your personal fitness goals. After learning about the 5 components of health-related fitness, you can focus on the areas that you feel need improvement. Remember that for overall physical fitness, you should find a balance between muscular fitness, endurance, flexibility, body composition and cardio when performing your exercise routines.
