What do you usually do when it's time for a cardio session? If you're like many people when training, you get on the machine and start training. Not much thought is given to it; You've done this a hundred times before so you know how the process works.

However, the next time you plan a workout, you may want to slow down and think about what you're doing a little more. Here are four checks to help you know what you're doing during your cardio workouts. They will help you achieve better results...

1. Check your breathing. Most people don't think about their breathing during cardio because it happens naturally. You go about your session and let your breathing take care of itself.

While this seems fine, it isn't. It's best if you focus on regular controlled breathing as this will ensure enough oxygen gets to your lungs and muscles. helps you destroy fatigue before it occurs.

2. Monitor your heart rate. The next step is to monitor your heart rate. While this requires some effort on your part, it can help keep you working in your chosen target zone.

Some days you may feel like you've missed out on working in the desired goal zone: remember that some days will feel more difficult than others.

3. Focus on your form. When you use a cross trainer machine that simulates climbing stairs, walking or running, or use a treadmill, it's easy to think that form is taking good care of itself.

However, there are many ways people cheat on these exercises and use poor form. For example…

  • are you leaning on the handlebars?

  • Do you make sure your feet are facing forward with every step?

To get good results, you need to review your form.

4. Be present. Finally, it is important that you are present in the moment. It's easy to rest and watch TV or read a book, but usually when you're zoning you're not focusing on what you want to do - working out. Plus, you're not working as hard as you could be.

Be present in the moment and feel how your body is working.

By following the four steps above, you can be sure to get more out of each of your cardio workouts and get the best results.
