Femme Flex Friday reveals why fad diets don't work
Many people get into fitness because they love the opportunity to see results and in some cases they even enjoy working out. However, the challenge for many is the nutritional component. Because of this challenge, fad diets are becoming increasingly popular as they are marketed as “the” solution. Whitney Jones explained on a recent episode of Femme Flex Friday why people new to the fitness lifestyle resort to it so early and often in their fitness journey.
“Fad diets are part of our culture because there is always a quick fix that we are constantly looking for,” said the three-time Olympic fitness champion. “We want instant gratification.”
Jones, Lenda Murray, Camile Periat and Wendy Fortino dedicated this show to breaking down the history of these diets and why they ultimately may not be as reliable as advertised. Fortino explained that during her time as a track and field athlete, she focused heavily on carbohydrates without knowing the proper use of "carb loading." She would like to share with her younger self what she has learned since then.
“I wish I could go back in time and incorporate a little more protein into my diet.”
Murray and Periat both said they tried the so-called cayenne cleanse, which was supposed to help with weight loss and improve digestion, while Jones recalled trying the cabbage soup diet when she was in high school. Other diets that have been discussed include the food pyramid diet and
even one involving a tapeworm. Fortino noted that many people start these diets because of another problem that they are trying to solve through dieting, but it can backfire and make the situation worse. She then offered words of wisdom to viewers looking for such a solution.
“I think it’s about doing something that doesn’t trigger you negatively, but that you can follow.”
