Femme Flex Friday” hosts talk about the pressure of perfection

Professional athletes and celebrities have many benefits that come with fame, but there can also be a lot of pressure. Fitness stars and physical athletes can become overwhelmed by the stress that comes with living up to a standard of perfection 24 hours a day. This stress can be counterproductive and in some cases even unhealthy.

The co-hosts of Femme Flex Friday recently released an episode on this topic. They pointed to social media as a source of this stress because the athlete's followers watch what they do on a daily basis. This can be a touchy subject even for legends of bodybuilding like eight-time Ms. Olympia Lenda Murray.

"I've been thinking about vlogging lately, so I'm looking at all the ways I can get my image out there," Murray said. "What I've noticed about vloggers, especially on YouTube, is that they're really comfortable and at peace with themselves and not perfect... I don't know if I can easily transition into that particular field because everything we do is about looking perfect."

Wendy Fortino mentioned that all of the co-hosts knew what life was like before social media and that they have evolved along with it. The difference between their presence before social media and now is the awareness that comes with being online.

"You don't really have this idea of how the world looks at you and what they think of you," she shared. “So for me it was pretty stressful and I think we all subconsciously put some kind of filter on ourselves.”

Whitney Jones is a three-time Ms. Fitness Olympia, but even she isn't immune to making the best first impression possible. She feels stress all year round, but especially when she's preparing for competition.

"You know post a workout video at 12 or 8 weeks before pumping. You have to have your shoulders rounded, quads popping, booty rounded. You have to look good because you don't start filming right at the start of the workout."

Jones offers advice to people who feel pressure to minimize the haters' comments or focus too much on the best lighting - learn to ignore or dismiss them and focus on what matters most to you.

“You have to have thick skin,” she advised. However, she admits that this is easier said than done.

"I think it's impossible to be like, 'I don't care.'
