Prime Time Muscle looks back on Gunter Schlierkamp's surprising victory over Ronnie Coleman

There have been several notable surprises in sports. Examples include the 1980 U.S. Olympic ice hockey team's victory over Russia, George Foreman shocking the world by defeating Michael Moorer to win the world title at age 45, and the New York Giants' miracle Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots in '42.

In the world of bodybuilding, the biggest upset in history may have come when Gunter Schlierkamp defeated five-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman at the 2002 GNC Show of Strength. Over 20 years after this competition, the hosts of Prime Time Muscle look back at how the man from Germany defeated the man many thought was unbeatable. Chris Cormier was on that show and remembered that someone who knew the sport pretty well saw potential in Schlierkamp: Joe Weider.

"He expressed to us how good Gunter looked and that he might cause Ronnie some problems. He was in such good shape."

The trio then looked at some photos of the eventual winner of this competition. Terrick El Guindy is a judge for the IFBB Pro League and wasn't so sure whether the decision was right.

"I saw the pictures when they were in the magazines back in the day and I said, 'Okay, he's big, he's tough, but he doesn't have anywhere near the aesthetically pleasing physique of a Ronnie Coleman or a Chris Cormier.'"

El Guindy admitted he wasn't at the show and couldn't judge it at the time, but he might have left the decision to Coleman if the show had taken place today.

“If I were sitting there, he would have to show me a lot of toughness, especially in places like the back, for him to win the show now.”
