Benefits of Bodyweight Exercises: Everything You Need to Know

It's not that one type of exercise outweighs the others, but if we had to plant our flag on one training style for lifelong practice, it would be bodyweight training exercises. The benefits of bodyweight exercises are numerous:

  • Keine Ausrüstung erforderlich
  • Du kannst sie überall machen
  • Größere Beweglichkeit, Flexibilität und Rumpfstärke
  • Sie sind hocheffizient
  • Sie sind frei

There's a lot of information about the benefits of bodyweight strength training exercises that you should know, so we'll dive into it for you here. Follow along as we talk all things “bodyweight” and give you some helpful exercises to try on your bodyweight training program journey.

What is a bodyweight exercise?

But before we can dive into the details of the above benefits, we need to establish a baseline. What is Bodyweight Training? Well, it may seem obvious, a workout that only involves body weight - but we think it's so much more. Bodyweight exercises are varied and can include anything from a cardio workout like running to a strength workout like squats or a mind-body balance exercise like yoga. That's why we love them so much! (Can you see us bubbling?) Well, to learn everything a bodyweight exercise is and can be, we have a complete resource for you here. But let’s jump right into the benefits we all want to experience.

The Benefits of Bodyweight Movement

1 | No equipment required

Ahhh, there's nothing better than having everything you need with you. It's like that feeling when your phone rings and it's already in your hand - you don't have to shuffle through purses and couch cushions to grab it to answer. We're betting on one thing: If your phone rings while you're holding it, you're more likely to respond to it.

Likewise, you will exercise when you have everything you need to exercise. The only thing you need is a little knowledge about exactly what to do, so we will share some of that information in this article to get you mentally and physically fit.

2 | The exercises accompany you everywhere

Once you get your mind right, you can do a bodyweight exercise and build muscle anywhere. A short training inYour hotel rooma short session at the gym, anice full body workout in a parkor wherever you can dream.

This is called convenience.

We know that one barrier many people have to getting their training done is not having enough time in the day or access to equipment. Your bodyweight workout won't take more than a few minutes, and as long as you have your body, you're fully equipped.

If you think we're bluffing about the time and space requirements, try this 10-minute workout from Coach Ashton on our virtual fitness platform, iChuze Fitness. She will prove to you that it only takes a few minutes to get your adrenaline pumping.

3 | Greater mobility, flexibility and muscle strength

Without the support of a machine underneath you, your body is responsible for keeping you upright or in proper form while you complete a specific bodyweight workout.

For example, let's think about a lunge. The machine that works similar muscle groups would be a leg press machine. When you do a seated leg press, your back and lower body are supported by a backrest and a seat, depending on the machine. This is fantastic for people who need additional support for knee or back problems as recommended by their doctor or alternative practitioner. The leg press asks you to push the machine away from you, rather than in a lunge where you push your body away from the floor. The machine essentially ensures proper form and protects your body.

Still, it removes - to a certain extent - your body's need to balance itself through flexibility, core strength and mobility. With this small adjustment, which affects the reliability of the machine, you are asking your body to strengthen itself to maintain form, train flexibility and balance, which becomes more important as you age.

4 | Bodyweight exercises are more efficient

Because bodyweight exercises are unassisted, they can handle multiple types of exercises in a short workout. Do you need strength and cardio? You have bodyweight HIIT exercises. Need to work on your mind while stretching your muscles? That's what yoga is for. Do you need reinforcement and low impact? How about mat Pilates? The list goes on and on. But if you're stuck for time, bodyweight training might be the answer for you.

5 | You are free

The sweet, sweet sound of a deal never gets old. Not really. Do you have a body? Then free training is waiting for you. It's about knowing how to use what you have to create what you need, and the more you try guided bodyweight workouts that you can find online, such as:our free 7-day pass for iChuze Fitness, the more you'll feel good about creating a safe and effective bodyweight exercise routine for yourself! They are the lowest barrier to entry we know of and they work!

So if you want to spice things up at the gym, consider making your equipment just for you.
