Demi Lovato just clarified which pronouns she prefers. The singer has previously noted a preference for they/them pronouns, but she's reverting to using they/their pronouns, she shared on a recent episode of the Spout podcast hosted by Tamara Dhia.
"I actually adopted the pronouns of they/them again," Lovato said after Dhia asked her to explain her chosen pronouns of they/her for someone who might not understand the concept. “For me, I’m such a fluid person,” she continued. "Last year in particular, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy, so when I was given the choice to walk into a bathroom and say 'women' and 'men,' I didn't feel like there was a bathroom for me because I didn't necessarily feel like a woman. I didn't feel like a man. I just felt like a human being."
Demi Lovato is “proud” of making her new album, Clean and Sober
Lately, however, she has been feeling different, the singer said in the podcast. “Lately I’ve been feeling more feminine and have adopted her/him again,” she said. "But I think what's important is that no one is perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, and especially as people learn. It's all about respect."
This comes a little over a year after Lovato first shared that she identifies as non-binary and would use the pronouns they/them going forward while speaking with Demi Lovato on her podcast 4D. "Over the last year and a half, I have been doing some healing and self-reflection work, and through that work I had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that being said, I am officially changing my pronouns to they/them," she explained. "I think this best reflects the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am and am still discovering."
Since then, she's been open about her experience using new pronouns, sharing that it's okay if people accidentally misname her if their intentions are in the right place. "As long as you continue to try to respect my truth and as long as I remember my truth, the shift will come on its own," she wrote in the caption of a since-deleted Instagram post in July 2021. "...It's all about your intention. It's important to me that you try, but if you make a mistake, it's okay.
While she made it clear in her last podcast appearance that she currently prefers she/her pronouns, Lovato's Instagram bio now lists she/them/them/them as her pronouns.
