Kate Winslet believes women become sexier” as they age

When it comes to outdated, sexist ideas about aging, women in the public eye continue to ignore the belief that a perpetual form of youth is the ideal. Kate Winslet recently shared her thoughts on the topic in a new interview on the BBC Woman's Hour podcast. She revealed why she believes women become "stronger" and "sexier" as they age - and it's a take that will undoubtedly have fans cheering and nodding in agreement.

Since her starring role in Titanic 25 years ago, Winslet has achieved worldwide fame. At 47, she's been open about the body shaming she's faced throughout her career, and now she's sharing her empowering thoughts about getting older, especially in an industry that so often favors the young.

Jane Fonda said aging is “not so scary” ahead of her 85th birthday.

"I'm 47, there are parts that don't do what you want them to do anymore," Winslet told host Emma Barnett about her body. "And it's kind of fabulous to say, 'Oh, well, that's just how it is, isn't it?'"

Not only does Winslet seem to let the little things slide, but she also seems to embrace the changes that come with age. "I think women get into their forties - certainly mid-forties - and think, 'Oh, well, this is the beginning of the decline and things start to change and fade and kind of slide in directions that I don't want to be in anymore,'" Winslet explained. "And I just decided, no. We're becoming more feminine, more powerful, sexy. We're growing more into ourselves. We have the opportunity to speak our minds and not be afraid of what people think of us. It I don’t care what we look like.”

Your advice to others? “Let’s go, girl, let’s just be in our power,” she said. "Why not? Life's too short, you know?"

Winslet also addressed the chatter surrounding her appearance as a police officer in the HBO hit Mare of Easttown - i.e. the lack of makeup and glamorous styling. Talk about her looks in the role was "absurd," she said, adding: "You would never make so much fuss or so much noise about a male actor's looks, would you?"

Sarah Jessica Parker responded to “misogynistic chatter” about her looks and age

The actress clarified that she wore "absolutely no makeup" when she played Marianne "Mare" Sheehan in the HBO series, but public comments about her performance in the role have inspired her to go makeup-free in her next role. She will play a worried mother in the upcoming drama series I Am Ruth. "I thought, 'Well, I only have one option here, and that's to go one step further and actually wear no makeup and just scrape my hair up into a crappy old ponytail like I do every day of my life anyway.'"

Winslet has recently felt a "shift" in her overall approach to her appearance and the roles she chooses, she explained. “I'm passionate about highlighting issues that need to be talked about, that people may find difficult to talk about,” she said. "And don't be afraid to really look like a hot mess most of the time. I mean, who puts makeup on while doing the school run? Not me."

Alicia Keys opened up about how makeup distorted her self-image

Winslet isn't one to shy away from keeping it real when it comes to showing what makes Hollywood stars look so glamorous on screen. "It's honestly a myth," she told British Vogue in 2021, speaking directly to anyone who wants to emulate a movie star's look. "Women on the red carpet wore hair and makeup for four hours to look like this and probably had facials every day during the week leading up to the event. I know because I was there and had so many facials," she noted.

However, she shared her real “secret to aging.” “For me it’s about beauty coming from within and not being so self-critical,” she said in the previous interview. Big props to Winslet for reminding fans why getting older is a gift, no matter what sexist and ageist comments try to insinuate otherwise.
