With new music on the horizon and a People's Choice Icon Award in hand, Shania Twain is feeling "reinvigorated" at age 57, she told Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on an episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna.
The singer, like so many others, focused on self-care and cultivating a positive mindset during the pandemic. For her, that led to writing the upbeat songs that now comprise her forthcoming album, Queen of Me.
"For the last few years, I wake up every day and really feel a freedom that I've never felt before," she said during the final interview. "And that comes with accepting that I can't slow down - for example - that I can't slow down the aging process. That's out of my control, so I have to start enjoying aging and enjoying everything that comes with it."
Shania Twain is 'so outrageous' about her changing body at 57
The "Man! I feel like a woman!" However, the singer is still working on fully embracing herself. "It makes me feel good to face that kind of fear that I think I've had my whole life when I really think about it, you know, the shyness about my mistakes and trying to hide mistakes."
"When I was younger, I was shy about wearing a bikini on the beach," Twain continued later in the interview while speaking only to Kotb, who has also shared her thoughts on wearing a bikini in her 50s. "And I think that was ridiculous, I need to stop this nonsense and start wearing a bikini on the beach now even though I'm not my 20-year-old self."

This idea of overcoming shyness around perceived flaws ties into why the Grammy Award winner has embraced nudity lately. In fact, she posed without clothes on for the cover of her single "Waking Up Dreaming," released in 2022," she explained. "I don't really love my body, I don't like looking at my body in the mirror with the lights on - or looking in the mirror at all, so I said, 'Listen, I'm going to face that fear.'"
Although she was initially scared, Twain came away from the experience feeling good. “I was petrified,” she told Kotb. But once she decided to commit to the experience, that fear no longer held her back. "It had to be vulnerable, where I felt like I was afraid of being judged or maybe even laughed at, embarrassed, but it was just empowering. It was really fabulous."
