Paulina Porizkova explained why she doesn't use filters on social media

The 57-year-old has had a career in front of the camera, but lately her raw, honest posts on Instagram have caught the attention of her fans. She writes about aging, mental health, and self-image alongside images of herself that reflect who she really is, whether she's wearing a bikini or looking directly into the camera without makeup or filters.

Now she's published a collection of essays called No Filter and shared more about her refreshing take on the social media landscape and aging in a new episode of Red Table Talk.

"I make it a point to never use filters because that's kind of my thing," Porizkova said, referring to both her Instagram profile and the photo on the cover of her book. For her, avoiding filters is a way to show what women her age really look like. “It makes me very happy when I see a woman my age who looks like me,” she added.

"I say, 'Oh, look, you have the same wrinkles, or you have the same, like little weird, jiggly bits here,'" Porizkova continued, pointing to the skin on her neck. "And I think it's beautiful about them, so I hope to do for other women what some of these women do for me."

But just because Porizkova is open and honest about who she is doesn't mean she's always sure about how her appearance has changed with age. “I’m not comfortable with it,” Porizkova said during the interview. "I still struggle with this on a daily basis, and I think that's where a lot of women fall. I have forehead wrinkles and I have wrinkles here and all the stuff that comes with being lucky to turn 57."

Since she is a woman in the public eye, sharing photos of herself on social media also attracts some criticism. "The amount of 'Hey, grandma' I get...it hurts my ego a little bit," she said of those who think she's too old to post photos of herself the way she does online. "But isn't that part of the beauty of getting older? That we gain more self-confidence because we know who we are.

Given that Porizkova has more than 890,000 followers on Instagram, it seems like her honesty is having an impact and resonating with others. You can hear more of her words of wisdom by watching the full Red Table Talk interview and reading her memoir.
