Selena Gomez knows how to vacation. The singer, actress and entrepreneur has been sharing tidbits from her summer trip to Italy on social media, and her latest TikTok doesn't just show her soaking up the sun on a boat. The post also includes a friendly reminder about body image. (See: Why Hoda Kotb Said She'll Always Wear a Bikini)
In typical Gomez fashion, she shaped the words into a funny soundbite to convey a pretty serious point on TikTok. In the video she is lying on a boat in a purple swimsuit. “Suck it in,” says a voice in the background of the clip. “I don’t suck in shit,” Gomez says, adjusting the tone she paired with her video. "Why?" the voice asks again. “Real stomachs fucking come back, okay?” she mouths.
“Vaca self,” Gomez wrote in the TikTok caption posted Wednesday. The short clip already has more than 11 million views and 2 million likes. Although the video is quick and light-hearted, the reminder from a celebrity with a huge following that all bodies are perfect the way they are undoubtedly made an impact.
If you follow Gomez on TikTok, you know that she regularly uses the platform to open up about body image. Earlier this year, the Only Murders In the Building star shared a candid video on the app in which he discussed comments she's received over the years about her body and how she feels about herself.
"So, I'm trying to stay skinny, but I went to Jack In The Box and got four tacos, three egg rolls, onion rings and a spicy chicken sandwich," the 30-year-old says in the clip. "But honestly, I don't care about my weight because people complain about it anyway. 'You're too small.' 'You're too big.' 'This doesn't fit.' 'Meh meh meh meh.'" She ended the candid video and said, "Bitch, I'm perfect the way I am."
While she uses social media to share personal thoughts and encourage others to love themselves, Gomez is not a fan of social media. In fact, she tries to stay away from apps like Instagram and TikTok as much as possible, she revealed in 2021. "It's too much of my personal life spread all over the place, and it just felt uncontrollable," Gomez said in an interview with Women's Wear Daily (WWD) at the time. “I felt like my thoughts and everything I consumed revolved around a million other people in the world saying good and bad things.”
While she still provides fans with plenty of content on Instagram and TikTok, she probably doesn't post it herself. Instead, an assistant could upload photos and captions of Gomez so she can share what she wants without the information overload that comes from spending too much time online, according to the WWD interview.
It's important to create boundaries on social media, but fans are certainly glad that Gomez is still finding ways to share content, especially when it encourages everyone to embrace their stomach and body in general exactly as it is. Cheers to “real stomachs” everywhere!
